Alison is a research professional with over a decade of experience in human research protections. She is a reliable ally for researchers navigating the complexities of research protections, with a deep understanding of the regulatory and IRB requirements for research involving human subjects.
Alison developed her enthusiasm for research during her time as a research assistant at the UIC Jane Addams College of Social Work. She then dedicated more than 10 years of her career to the University of Illinois at Chicago's Office for the Protection of Research Subjects (OPRS), where she honed her expertise in understanding the intricate world of human research protections. During her time at OPRS, Alison held multiple roles, including Assistant Director for the Social/Behavioral/Educational Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Assistant Director for Single IRB and External Reliance. This experience has equipped her to help researchers navigate the sometimes daunting IRB process.
Alison's knowledge extends beyond mere understanding; it's practical and applicable. She can provide essential guidance to investigators on regulatory and IRB requirements, necessary documentation, special considerations, and assistance navigating the IRB process. Her expertise spans various areas, including but not limited to: research involving vulnerable populations, research with students, educational research, international research, single IRB, and collaborative research.
Alison's comprehensive understanding ensures that researchers receive thorough guidance during the IRB submission process, ensuring alignment with both University and regulatory requirements. Her extensive knowledge positions her as a dependable collaborator, partnering with researchers to tackle issues related to human research protections and the ethical conduct of research.
Alison is also committed to promoting inclusive research practices. She is the point of contact and outreach specialist for the CIRTification program, a free human subjects training program tailored for community research partners.
Alison holds a Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) and a Master's degree in Jurisprudence in Child and Family Law (MJ) from Loyola University. Armed with this unique blend of knowledge, she engages with researchers from diverse fields to comprehensively address research challenges.
