Overview
Research Advancement catalyzes, accelerates and advances interdisciplinary research across the translational spectrum, with an emphasis on reducing health disparities. We support faculty from all schools/colleges and foster a culture of collaboration across the East and West campuses.
We offer an integrated suite of services to empower faculty take their research to the next level, including early career faculty who are seeking to garner their first R01 as well as established investigators who are planning a complex proposal submission, such as an interdisciplinary research center, program project, or multi-site clinical trial. We can help faculty explore new directions to broaden the scope of their research project, identify potential collaborators or partner organizations, provide guidance on potential funding mechanisms and more.
Depending on your project needs, we can suggest a brainstorming session (“Research Huddle”) to assist with early-stage concept development or provide ad-hoc or ongoing consultative support and tailored resources in connection with a large-scale proposal submission.

Planning
Relevant Support:
Research Huddle: A Research Huddle is a focused brainstorming session designed to provide strategic guidance to faculty who are planning an interdisciplinary R01 or larger-scale proposal submission. We offer two types of Research Huddles: Catalyst Huddle and Transformative Huddle.
- Catalyst Huddle: The overall goal of a Catalyst Huddle is to empower early career faculty- or faculty branching into new research areas- to submit a competitive R01 proposal. A huddle can assess reviewer critiques from prior applications, brainstorm new research directions, and/or provide feedback on the Specific Aims page of the proposal. In addition, faculty will be connected to relevant CCTS resources to strengthen their proposal.
- The proposed project should be interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary.
- Candidates should have a body of preliminary data with the potential for expansion to an R01 (or equivalent) proposal and have a focused question/need that can be addressed in a 90-minute brainstorming session.
- A Catalyst Huddle should take place three to six months prior to the proposal due date, if possible.
- Transformative Huddle: The overall goal of a Transformative Huddle is to empower established faculty to submit a nationally competitive large-scale proposal, such as an interdisciplinary research center, program project, or multi-site clinical trial. Based on need, a huddle can advise on how to develop large-scale project, support team building, guide the development of the research vision, or brainstorm key concepts for the proposal (i.e., cores, services, research projects). Investigators will be connected to relevant CCTS and other institutional resources. Proposal development services can provide additional support to faculty as they develop a proposal (see below).
- Candidates should have identified a funding opportunity, established a preliminary vision of their project, and have a focused question/need that can be addressed in a two hour brainstorming session.
- A Transformative Huddle should take place six to twelve months prior to the proposal due date, if possible.
Proposal Development: Consultative services are designed for faculty who are submitting a large-scale scale proposal to the NIH, such as an interdisciplinary research center, program project, or multi-site clinical trial. We can advise on strategic approaches to developing a proposal, support team building, and provide tailored resources to strengthen the proposal before submission.
- Proposal development consultations may follow a Transformative Huddle, but a Huddle is not required for this service.
- An initial consultation should take place at least six months prior to the proposal deadline, if possible.
