From New Hire to MVP: Developing a Research-Ready Workforce

To address the need for early skill development among UIC clinical research staff, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science launched the Research Essentials’ Playbook—a focused bootcamp designed specifically for staff with limited experience in human subjects research.
CCTS offers a strong suite of training programs for research professionals, including the RC+ Certificate Program. However, feedback from across campus highlighted a common challenge: new research staff often need practical, role-relevant guidance early on to confidently navigate research operations, institutional processes, and human subjects requirements. Without that early support, onboarding can take longer and place additional strain on study teams.
The Research Essentials’ Playbook was intentionally designed to be focused, efficient, and immediately useful. Content is aligned with national entry-level research competencies and refined using input from experienced research professionals. The bootcamp-style approach allows participants to walk away with concrete skills they can apply right away—helping them contribute more quickly and effectively within their study teams.
“With the Research Essentials’ Playbook, our goal is to set new research staff up for success early,” said program coordinator, Sudeshna De. “The skills gained through this workshop help them step into their roles with confidence, making them true MVPs within their study teams.”
In its first year, the bootcamp attracted participants from a wide range of research roles, with more than half having two or fewer years of experience. Post-workshop feedback showed high levels of satisfaction, increased confidence in job-related skills, and a stronger sense of connection to UIC’s research community.
By providing timely, targeted training, the Research Essentials’ Playbook helps research teams get up to speed faster and supports a more consistent, confident research workforce.
