Research in the last several years has led to the approval of multiple vascular therapeutics shown to activate PI3K/Akt, a key signaling intermediate. The ubiquitous expression pattern of the Akt1 isoform, however, limits further interpretation of these pleiotropic effects and
warrants cell-specific characterization. Deciphering theendothelialspecific role of PI3K/Akt1 signaling will provide invaluable insight given the significance of endothelial dysfunction in cardiovascular disease pathogenesis.
