K. Luan Phan, MD, Core Director
Dr. Phan comes to the CCTS with a background rich in clinical research experience and is eager to continue the high quality service and growth of the CRC. In his faculty and clinical roles, Dr. K. Luan Phan is Director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Clinical and Research Programs and Associate Head for Clinical and Translational Research in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is also Chief of NeuroPsychiatric Research and a VA Research Scientist at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. He has a longstanding commitment to translate discoveries from affective and cognitive neuroscience to improve our understanding and treatment of anxiety and mood disorders. Dr. Phan’s research has been consistently funded by the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Affairs, and Department of Defense over the past 10 years.
Dr. Phan received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and received psychiatry residency and research track training at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinics at the University of Pittsburgh and at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Clinics. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012, he was Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience Program at the University of Michigan and Chief of the Mental Health Clinic at the Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System.
Maryann Holtcamp, MS, APN, Director of Clinical Research Education
Maryann Holtcamp is the Co-Director of Clinical Operations for the Clinical Research Center (CRC). Her role in the CRC focuses on oversight of all clinical procedures performed by the CRC’s team of research professionals. She provides both ongoing clinical and research educational opportunities as well as coordination of protocol specific training for the more than 50 active protocols in the CRC. Her extensive critical care nursing background and many years in clinical research give her expertise as she works closely with the CRC’s investigators and staff. Additionally, Ms. Holtcamp is a board certified clinical nurse specialist able to provide advanced assessments and procedures to many protocols in the CRC.
Charity Ball, MSN, RN, Co-Director of Clinical Research Operations
Charity Ball is the day-to-day Operations Manager for the CRC. Her role in the CRC focuses on daily clinic flow, utilization tracking and evaluation, and quality assurance. She has an extensive clinical research background that includes over 10 years of experience in various roles including research coordinator, research manager, and project manager of a multi-site NHLBI funded trial. Her clinical nursing milieu is in critical care.
Amy Kennedy-Krage, MBA, MSW, Co-Director of Clinical Research Operations
Amy Kennedy-Krage is the Director of Clinical Research Operations for the Clinical Research Center (CRC). Her role in the CRC focuses on managing the direct clinical operations and ensuring effective oversight and coordination of inpatient and outpatient clinical and translational research services. Additional responsibilities include oversight of the day-to-day operations, financial performance, regulatory compliance, strategic development, site management and monitoring of clinical and translational research operations. She has an extensive clinical research background with over 15 years of experience in different roles including research coordinator and research program manager.
